Come just as you are…
I’m Kristen — artist, retreat host, and believer in the healing beauty of creativity.
Meet Kristen
Born and raised in Texas, I never imagined I would one day build a life in Southeast Asia.
But over the years, Thailand and the surrounding region have deeply shaped both my life and my artwork. The colors, landscapes, cultures, and everyday moments here continually inspire the way I see the world and the way I paint.
Somewhere along the way, watercolor became more than just a creative hobby for me. It became a place of rest, healing, and rediscovering joy — especially after years of perfectionism and self-doubt.
Painting taught me to slow down, notice beauty again, and embrace the unexpected.
Whether I’m painting a quiet market scene, tropical plants, misty mountains, or everyday life in Southeast Asia, I’m constantly reminded that beauty exists almost everywhere we learn to pay attention.
This retreat was created from that place.
My hope is not simply to teach watercolor techniques, but to create an experience where people feel inspired, refreshed, creatively awakened, and deeply connected to the beauty around them.
I’m so excited to share this experience — and this part of the world I love so much — with you.

Where will we be staying?
Our retreat home for the weekend is the beautiful Phu Chaisai Mountain Resort, nestled in the hills of northern Thailand near Chiang Rai.
Surrounded by rolling mountains, lush greenery, and fresh mountain air, this peaceful eco-luxury resort provides the perfect setting to slow down, create, and reconnect with yourself.
September is one of the most beautiful times of year in northern Thailand, with clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and stunning views stretching across the countryside.
During our time together, you'll enjoy comfortable accommodations, delicious meals, inspiring painting sessions, and plenty of opportunities to relax and soak in the beauty around you. Whether you're sipping coffee while watching the morning mist drift through the hills, painting with fellow creatives, or unwinding after a day of exploration, the resort offers a truly memorable retreat experience.
Room selections are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Pricing is based on room type rather than room location or size.
We can't wait to welcome you to this special corner of Thailand.
-
What should I pack?
September in northern Thailand is warm, lush, and beautifully green. Expect daytime temperatures in the 70s–80s°F (mid-20s to low-30s°C), occasional rain showers, and comfortable evenings.
Here's what we recommend bringing:
🎨 Art Supplies – Pack your favorite watercolor set, brushes, sketchbook, and any must-have materials. A detailed supply list will be provided closer to the retreat.
👕 Comfortable Clothing – Lightweight, breathable clothing is ideal. Consider bringing a light sweater or wrap for air-conditioned spaces and cooler evenings.
☔ Light Rain Jacket or Travel Umbrella – September is part of Thailand's green season, so occasional rain showers are normal. If you'd rather not pack an umbrella, they're easy to purchase locally, including at the airport.
👟 Shoes with Good Grip – We’ll be exploring beautiful gardens, walking paths, and resort grounds that can be wet after rain. Comfortable walking shoes or sandals with good traction are highly recommended.
🩴 Flip-Flops or Pool Sandals – Perfect for relaxing around the resort and navigating wet areas comfortably.
🏊♀️ Swimwear – Take advantage of the resort pool and enjoy some downtime between activities.
🕶️ Hat & Sunglasses – Helpful for excursions and enjoying Thailand's beautiful outdoor spaces.
🌿 Bug Spray & Sunscreen – A good idea for any tropical destination.
👜 Small Day Bag – Perfect for carrying your essentials during excursions and outings.
👗 Something Special to Wear – We’ll share a memorable dinner together, so bring an outfit that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and ready to celebrate.
📸 Camera or Phone – You'll want to capture the stunning mountain views, beautiful gardens, and special moments from the weekend.
✨ An Open Heart & Creative Spirit – More than anything, come ready to slow down, connect, create, and enjoy a beautiful weekend with fellow artists.
-
What art supplies do I need to bring?
After you register, you'll receive a recommended supply list to help you prepare for the retreat.
Most guests will want to bring:
✨ Your favorite watercolor paints
✨ Watercolor brushes
✨ A watercolor sketchbook or journal
✨ Watercolor paper
✨ A pencil and eraser for sketching
✨ A clipboard or sturdy backing board for painting
✨ Any favorite tools or supplies you regularly enjoy usingIf you want supply recommendations, here the link to my favorite starter supplies — Amazon List
Don't worry if you're new to watercolor or don't already own supplies. Optional artist supply packages are available for purchase, ranging from a simple starter kit to more premium options.
Throughout the retreat, I'll also have a variety of my own favorite supplies available for demonstration and sampling, giving you the opportunity to try new materials and discover some new favorites.
You can explore the available supply package options on the website or contact me directly if you'd like help choosing the package that's right for you.
-
Does this retreat include plein air painting?
Yes—but with a relaxed and flexible approach.
During our visit to the beautiful Doi Tung Villa and Gardens, there will be optional time set aside for sketching, painting, photography, or simply exploring the grounds. If you'd like to bring a sketchbook and paint on location, you'll have plenty of inspiration to work from.
While this retreat is not a dedicated plein air workshop and formal plein air instruction will be limited, I'll be available to offer guidance, answer questions, and help you make the most of your time painting outdoors.
Before our excursion to the gardens, I'll also share a few tips and ideas to help you approach sketching and painting on location with confidence.
If plein air painting is your primary goal and you're looking for intensive outdoor painting instruction throughout the retreat, this may not be the best fit. However, if you enjoy observing nature, gathering inspiration, taking reference photos, and spending some time sketching or painting in a beautiful setting, you'll love this experience.
-
Do you offer vegetarian, vegan, or other special dietary options?
Yes!
The resort is happy to accommodate a variety of dietary preferences and needs, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other common food restrictions whenever possible.
After you register, you'll receive a guest information form where you can share any dietary preferences, allergies, or food sensitivities. I'll work directly with the resort to ensure they have your information well in advance of the retreat.
Thailand is a wonderful destination for a variety of diets, with plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, rice dishes, and flavorful local cuisine that can often be adapted to meet individual needs.
If you have a specific dietary concern you'd like to discuss before booking, please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm happy to answer any questions and help you determine whether this retreat is a good fit for your needs.
-
Is this retreat suitable for guests with limited mobility?
Possibly—every situation is different.
The resort itself is set on a hillside and some areas of the property, gardens, and excursion locations may involve uneven terrain, stairs, walking paths, or surfaces that can be slippery during Thailand's rainy season.
Many guests who use a cane, walking stick, or walker may find the retreat manageable, especially if they are comfortable navigating moderate walking distances and uneven ground.
However, guests who require full wheelchair accessibility may encounter challenges, as accessibility standards in Thailand can differ significantly from those in countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and parts of Europe.
If you have mobility concerns, I encourage you to contact me before booking. I'd be happy to discuss your specific needs, answer questions about the resort and planned activities, and help determine whether this retreat is a good fit for you.
My goal is for every guest to have a safe, enjoyable, and relaxing experience, and I'm happy to explore possible accommodations whenever feasible.
-
What is the weather like in September?
September is part of Thailand's beautiful green season, when the countryside is at its most lush, vibrant, and alive. In northern Thailand, the mountains and rice fields are a brilliant green, waterfalls are flowing, and the landscapes are absolutely stunning.
🌤 Average Temperatures:
Daytime: Typically in the upper 70s to mid-80s°F (25-30°C)
Evenings & Early Mornings: Comfortable and refreshing, especially in the mountains
☔ What about the rain?
September does fall during Thailand's rainy season, but that doesn't usually mean all-day rain. More often, you'll experience passing showers mixed with plenty of dry periods throughout the day. In fact, it's quite common to enjoy sunshine, dramatic clouds, and a refreshing rain shower all within the same afternoon.
One of the reasons I love this season is that it offers a side of Thailand many visitors never get to experience. The mountains are beautifully green, the air feels fresh, and the scenery is incredibly inspiring for artists and nature lovers alike.
I recommend packing lightweight clothing, a light rain jacket, and shoes with good grip for walking on occasionally wet paths. Come prepared to embrace the beauty of the season, and you'll discover why it's one of my favorite times of year in Thailand.
